In 2001 we bought a stove for our first home, we loved the stove but we thought we could make something better. We had a design and engineering background and an idea about a little stove with an oven. From the sketches we made a wooden prototype and then found a company who could fabricate the components in steel.
The early prototypes were welded up in our garage and trialled in our house. Our parts and tooling outgrew the garage and we got our first premises, an industrial unit in Caerphilly in South Wales.
We needed a name for our stove, one of our son’s favourite books when he was 3 was about a penguin who didn’t like the cold, from that chilly penguin… Chilli Penguin was born.
As our first model had a little oven box on top, it became known as the Hungry Penguin. Our first customer bought the first production model in 2002. We are still in touch with that customer and he is still using his Hungry Penguin.
In 2010 we were able to move the business to its current base in Pwllheli on the beautiful Llŷn Peninsula. We work with partner companies in Caernarfon for some of the industrial processes. All the fabrication and painting is completed in house, here in Pwllheli.
Today we have over 100 stockists across Wales and the UK and have a small showroom in Pwllheli, called “Stof 49”
Our stoves can be found are all over the country; in houses, offices, studios, pubs, cafes, converted chapels, canal boats, yurts, shepherd’s huts, glamping pods, man dens and even a cave dwelling. They come in all shapes, sizes and colours and we are very proud of all of them. Each of them has been hand made, in our workshop on the Llŷn Peninsula, and individually checked before being sent out into the big wide world.
